Eight medals and World Champs places secured by University of Bath-based swimmers at 2025 Aquatics GB Championships

Silvers for sporting scholars Matthew Ward and Joshua Gammon were among eight medals won by University of Bath-based swimmers at the 2025 Aquatics GB Swimming Championships in London.
Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering student Ward (pictured top) was runner-up to Olympic silver-medallist Duncan Scott in the men’s 200m individual medley, the Bill Whiteley Scholar overhauling Evan Jones and Charlie Hutchison in the closing stages of a thrilling final.
There were more fireworks in the men’s 50m butterfly final where Alumni Fund Scholar Gammon and Aquatics GB Bath Performance Centre team-mate Jacob Peters both touched the wall in 23.44 to finish joint second to former University of Bath Swimming Club member Ben Proud. Peters and Gammon had finished third and fourth respectively in the 100m final earlier in the week.

An enthralling men’s 100m freestyle final saw triple Olympic champion Tom Dean – in his only event of the week – and training partner Jacob Whittle place third and fourth respectively to qualify as part of the GB relay foursome for this summer’s World Aquatics Championships. Dean was already pre-selected in the 4x200m freestyle relay following his golden triumph in Paris last summer.
Ward’s second podium place of the week saw him finish third in the 100m backstroke, just ahead of fellow scholars Cam Brooker and Jack Skerry. Ivor Powell Scholar Brooker was a bronze-medallist over 50m, again placing just ahead of team-mate Skerry who was also fourth in the 200m backstroke final followed by Ward and Chemical Engineering student Hendrik Van Der Leest.
Olympic marathon swimmer Leah Crisp won 1,500m freestyle bronze and there were impressive backstroke performances from University of Bath Swimming Club’s Niamh Ward, the Civil Engineering student placing fourth over 50m, fifth over 200m and seventh over 100m.
Holly Hibbott finished just outside the medals in the 400m freestyle, as did Mathematics student Christian Ryan in the 200m breaststroke.
Other finalists during a busy week at the London Aquatics Centre included Olympic relay gold-medallist Kieran Bird, who was seventh in the men’s 400m freestyle; Chemistry for Drug Discovery student Anna Farrow, who matched that finish in the women’s 400m IM; and Business student Jemima Hall, who was eighth and one place behind team-mate Hibbott in the women’s 200m freestyle.
A host of swimmers also reached B finals, with victories being recorded in the men’s 100m breaststroke by Ryan, 200m backstroke by Brooker and women’s 400m freestyle by Jessica Podger.
Team Bath AS swimmer Nancy Jubb also contested two multi-classification (MC) freestyle B finals, placing second over 100m and third over 50m.
