Team Bath Judo’s Sidney Tancock gained her first World Ranking points when she won a superb silver in Tunis on her debut at Continental Open level.

Tancock (pictured top left), an International Development with Economics graduate who works for the University of Bath in Student Recruitment and Admissions, defeated Canada’s Heidi Quach and Hong Kong’s Lok Yi Ho to reach the semi-finals of the -48kg weight category.

That set up a contest against top seed Oumaima Bedioui of the host country, ranked number 30 in the world, and she took the lead after scoring a Yuko. Tancock soon levelled the scores, though, and then in the last minute threw her opponent for another Yuko score to claim a big win.

The final saw Tancock face off against Canada’s Marie-Lune Turmel, who produced some technical ground work to secure a hold and pin her opponent for the win.

Adam Hall, Head of Judo at the University of Bath, said: “It was a fantastic performance from Sidney to come away with three wins and a medal from her debut at this level. This is the result of her continued professionalism and dedication to her craft. She knows she can go further.”

Team Bath also sent a team to the Danish Open, where they gained valuable experience across the U21 and Senior competitions as well as the training camp that followed. A number of wins were recorded by the judoka, with the highlight being a bronze medal for Economics student Elliot Wilkinson in the U21 -81kg category – his debut at this weight.

This coming weekend sees the team head to the English Open, while Tancock and Chloe Robyns-Landricombe will contest the Algiers Continental Open.
