Team Bath Tennis trio help GB win fifth successive medal at Master’U BNP Paribas world student team tournament

11 December 2022

Ben Jones, Giles Hussey and Holly Hutchinson continued a proud tradition of Team Bath Tennis players helping Great Britain enjoy medal success at the world’s biggest student tennis team tournament.

The trio were part of a six-strong GB squad that finished runners-up to the United States at the Master’U BNP Paribas tournament in Honfleur, France – the first time it had been contested since University of Bath graduate Jones helped Britain also win silver at the 2018 and 2019 editions.

Britain comfortably beat Switzerland 6-1 in their opening match and then defeated Australia 5-2 to set up a title showdown with the defending champions.

Hutchinson, coached by Ian MacDonald, produced a stunning performance in her singles match to inflict a first defeat in 41 matches for the number one-ranked NCAA player, an achievement matched by Charles Broom in the men’s singles.

Team USA fought back to take the title 5-2 but it was a fifth podium place in a row for GB, whose team also included Emily Arbuthnott and Nadia Rawson.

Team Bath Tennis coach Barry Scollo, who was once again part of the coaching team for GB, said: “Winning our fifth medal in a row at the event is an extraordinary achievement, showing the impressive growth of the university tennis offering. Congratulations to the team on winning the silver medal and for continuing the legacy of British university tennis on the international stage.”
