Men’s epee team medal helps wheelchair fencers finish with a flourish at World Championships

Piers Gilliver and Dimitri Coutya both won their third medals of the 2019 Wheelchair Fencing World Championships in South Korea as part of a British quartet that bagged a brilliant bronze in the men’s epee team competition.
Matthew Campbell-Hill and Oliver Lam-Watson joined them on the podium as GB finished the Cheongju championships on a high by beating Italy 45-33 in the third-placed play-off.
Both Gilliver and Coutya (pictured) had already won individual epee gold medals, in the Category A and B competitions respectively. Coutya also took silver in the foil and Gilliver claimed bronze in the sabre.
The GB team is coached by Peter Rome in the fencing salle at the University of Bath’s Sports Training Village. The Wheelchair Fencing World Class Programme is managed by the EiS (English Institute of Sport), which has a high-performance centre at the University. Click here to find out more.
