Terrific Turkey run sees Team Bath Tennis ace Anna Smith reach WTA Tour final in Istanbul
Team Bath Tennis player Anna Smith reached her first women’s doubles final of 2018 following an excellent run at the 2018 Istanbul Cup in Turkey, a WTA Tour competition.
GB Fed Cup player Smith and partner Xenia Knoll of Switzerland came through a tough opening match on the clay against Raluca Olaro and Yana Sizikova 6-2 4-6 10-7 before easing to a 6-2 6-2 victory over Nicola Geuer and Priscilla Hon in the last eight.
A 7-5 6-3 success against Maria Irigoyen and Ellen Perez put the number three seeds into the final but their title hopes were dashed by China’s Chen Liang and Shuai Zhang, who edged a 6-4 6-4 victory.
Smith, coached by Ian MacDonald at the University of Bath Sports Training Village, has flown straight to Rabat where she is contesting this week’s Morocco Open with Barbora Krejčíková of the Czech Republic.
