Somerset Senior Cup final, sevens tournaments and England duty continue busy period for University rugby players

26 April 2018

The University of Bath men’s rugby club will play Weston Hornets RFC in the final of the Somerset Senior Cup on Friday (7.30pm).

The IKON Construction-sponsored team beat the first XVs of Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon in the last eight and semi-finals respectively.

Chris Lilley, who is coaching the Blue & Gold, said: “This is the tenth year the University has entered into the Somerset Senior Cup, a competition we are proud to be involved in.

“We always choose to play our games away, so that our players can experience the Somerset County clubs. We also turned down the option of a neutral venue for the final, with the view to there being a greater atmosphere and experience at Weston Hornets RFC for all involved.

“The squad is made up largely of players who will be returning to the University next season. They have done well to get us through the previous round and we are pleased to get the reward of a final.”

The University of Bath also competed in the national BUCS 7s Championship in Leeds on Wednesday, reaching the semi-finals. Bath will return to Leeds on May 2 to field men’s and women’s teams in the BUCS 7s Trophy competition.

On the same day, the men’s squad will be competing in a tournament with the England 7s Academy at their Lensbury Club headquarters. Bath is one of four RFU Partnership Universities taking part, along with Loughborough, Northumbria and Durham.

A busy week will conclude with the University competing in the London Floodlit 7s at Roslyn Park on Thursday, May 3.

Meanwhile, students Will Britton, Will Partington and Jack Edmondson were all part of the England Students squad that travelled to France for two matches this month.

University of Bath Head of Rugby Aaron James was head coach of an England squad that narrowly lost out 25-24 in their opening match before losing 37-22 in their second game.
