22 April 2018

Tiarnan Brady and Ben Jones won the men’s doubles title and there were three more medal finishes as University of Bath students enjoyed a successful visit to the BUCS Individual Tennis Championships.

Sports Performance student Brady and Chemistry student Jones, who is supported by a Buchan Jones sports scholarship, beat University of Stirling pair Scott Duncan and Kieran Macarty 5-7 6-1 10-2 in Sunday’s final.

It was their fifth win of a busy weekend at Loughborough University and the third time they had held their nerve in a tie-break, including an 11-9 victory over number two seeds Dominic Beesley and Max Wennakoski in the semi-final.

Fellow University of Bath students Josh Farmer and Francesco Paschetto also played brilliantly to reach the last four of the men’s doubles, where their run was ended by a hard-fought 7-5 6-3 defeat to Duncan and Macarty.

Farmer and Paschetto received bronze medals, as did Jones and Sport & Exercise Science student Ellie-Rose Griffiths after reaching the semi-finals of the men’s and women’s singles competitions respectively.

Jones beat team-mate Farmer on his way to the last four, where he lost 6-3 6-0 to top seed Filip Veger, while Griffiths recorded an excellent 4-6 6-4 6-2 victory over number three seed Athena Nathalia before a 6-2 6-2 defeat to eventual champion Natasha Fourouclas.
